Were you looking for the Blacktip Reef Shark or Whitetip Reef Shark from Hungry Shark World?

An entry level shark that prefers shallower waters and smaller prey, but still boasts a nasty nip.

— In-game description
Preferring shallower water and smaller prey, what the reef shark lacks in size it makes up with raw aggression. He hunts only in the Sunlit Zone.

— Unused description.

The Reef Shark is a male Shark and the first playable shark in Hungry Shark Evolution. He is unlocked upon entering and downloading the game for the first time.

Appearance[]

The Reef Shark is a medium-sized shark with a triangular dorsal fin positioned far back on its lighter grey top and darker below.

Description[]

As mentioned, the Reef Shark is the smallest playable shark. Because of its size, it only eats smaller fish, though it may eat bigger prey during Gold Rushes. Its maximum size is 4 meters. Being the first shark, it's the weakest and has the smallest diet. It takes longer to eat prey, especially humans or other reef sharks. So its bite stat, which determines how long it takes to eat something, is weaker than other sharks. Most should upgrade its bite section first. Its boosting is limited to a few meters even when fully upgraded. One of the few but significant advantages of the Reef Shark though is its decreased energy reduction rate. He can survive for a long time without eating anything, unlike other sharks. Another advantage is the fact that the Reef Shark can trigger a Gold Rush the fastest of all sharks; requiring only 2,500 points, the Reef Shark can be used to make a "quick buck" when needed, especially for newer players. One advantage is it uses less energy, so it can survive longer without eating. Another is it triggers Gold Rushes fastest at 2,500 points, so it's good for making quick money, especially for new players. The Astronaut Baby helps by preventing beaching damage. The Skateboard and Jetpack also helps the Reef Shark move easier, though unlocking them early is unlikely since you'll move on to stronger sharks first. If affordable, buy the Baby Reef Shark.

Goals[]

Reef Shark Shells

Like all sharks in the game, the Reef Shark has a set of individual goals. For all sharks, its Extra Goal is unlocked by completing all prior goals. The list of goals and their respective rewards is as follows:

Name Objective Reward
Tropical Terror Eat 50 Tropical Fish 50 Coins
Swimming Lesson Swim 500m 50 Coins
Man Eater Eat 3 Humans 50 Coins
Pelican Pinch Eat 5 Pelicans 75 Coins
Mini Jump Jump 3M out of water (use boost) 50 Coins
Turtle Neck Eat 4 Turtles 125 Coins
Survival Chief Survive for 4 minutes 100 Coins
Innocent Bystander Eat 3 Beach Bystanders 150 Coins

Reminder that this list includes the Reef Shark's natural prey and not prey available to it during Gold Rushes.

Earning Coins with the Reef Shark[]

The Reef Shark is often overlooked when players are considering earning mass amounts of coins, as his abilities are easily overshadowed by more powerful sharks. However, one major advantage of the Reef Shark is that he only requires 2,500 points to activate Gold Rush; this is a minuscule number compared to the Gold Rush prerequisites of other sharks.

  • Therefore, the Reef Shark can be used to earn a lot of coins. Here is a simple guide to earning coins using the Reef Shark:
  • Establish a few "hunting grounds" - areas with easy-to-catch prey, large amounts of it and few hazards. Examples of hunting grounds include shores (with humans to catch and tropical fish to consume) and sea beds (with many crabs and barracudas).
  • Try using a Shark Vortex on the reef shark to yield more gold as he has only 2500 points to start a gold rush.
  • Try to devour entire groups of creatures rather than individual creatures, as you earn bonus points from consuming entire groups. Apply this method to oncoming groups of creatures until a Gold Rush is triggered.
  • Take full advantage of the gold rush. There are two things that should be targeted: high yielding prey and mass groups of prey. High yielding prey is easier to catch, but normally takes longer to eat and can be harder to find. Mass groups of prey contain large numbers of easy-to-catch prey. The prey in these groups does not yield much on their own, but when consumed as groups they can add up.
  • Keep repeating this method.
  • A good idea to earn coins is to try and find Evil Reef Sharks or Evil Hammerhead Sharks just before entering Gold Rush, and then eat them. It pulls off a decent amount of gold, especially if there are schools of tropical fish nearby.

Note: If you own a large enough shark, like the Great White Shark, Electro Shark, or DarkHammer, this method becomes obsolete, as they are far more powerful and can earn coins faster.

Trivia[]

  • The Reef Shark in Hungry Shark Evolution is based on the real-life Caribbean reef shark, known as Carcharhinus perezi.
  • In real life, most Reef Sharks can't grow past 2 meters, but in the game they can grow up to 4 meters. Evil Reef Sharks can get even larger.
  • The Reef Shark particularly has the slowest health drain of all the standard sharks in Hungry Shark Evolution; therefore, if left idle, the Reef Shark can survive longer than the Megalodon would in the same conditions - even though the Reef Shark's health meter is minuscule when compared to the Megalodon's. This slow health drain prevents cheating on big sharks. However, Ghost Shark has the slowest health drain out of all sharks in the entire game.
  • The Reef Shark in real life is not a specific type of shark - it is actually a group of different types of sharks. According to one of FGOL's Facebook posts, it is a Grey Reef Shark. However, this seems to be retconned, as a recent update reveals he is a Caribbean Reef Shark.
  • In earlier versions of the game, the Reef Shark could be easily killed by an Evil Great White Shark; however, in an update he has got an increase in his health meaning the Evil Great White Shark can no longer kill him in one bite, but he can still be killed by any enemy shark above it.
  • The baby shark Santa Baby is a Baby Reef Shark with a Santa Claus costume on and with a more greenish grey skin. Aside from the Santa Baby, the Oceana Baby (in the Natasha the Narwhal update) is a Baby Reef with a bobble hat, a shirt, and brown skin with spots. The Reef Shark has an apple on his head for the Natasha update.
  • The Reef Shark's name is "Bruce." Ironically, Bruce is also the name of the Great White Shark from Jaws. [1]
